Learn to Play Star Cluster Ball

A quick beginner guide to turns, scoring, chains, grouping, and match flow.

This guide teaches the basics of Star Cluster Ball in just a few minutes, including quick play rules, key table features, an example turn, and beginner tips.

Quick Play: Start in 3 Steps

1. Set Up

Place all balls behind the Play Line and decide which Side each player or team takes.

2. Take Turns

Roll or flick balls onto the table, aiming for Astrolabe Positions to score.

3. Score & Build

Score points, build Chains for bonuses, and use Grouping to control space.

Turn rule: your turn ends if you miss, produce a Grouping, or commit a foul.

Know the Table

These are the key features beginners should understand before playing.

Astrolabe Positions

Scoring zones with slots where balls can land for points.

Play Line

The shooting line players must stay behind when taking a shot.

Grouped Balls

Non-scoring balls that stay in play and can block, disrupt, or set up future shots.

Chains

Balls of the same colour placed adjacent in a position, creating bonus scoring opportunities.

Example Turn

Player A is Blue. Player B is Red. Here is how a turn might unfold.

  1. Player A shoots: lands in Position 2a and scores 2 points. Their turn continues.
  2. Player A shoots again: lands in Position 2b next to their first ball, forming a Chain. They score 4 points: 2 points plus a 2-point bonus.
  3. Player A shoots: lightly nudges Player B’s ball back to the play area, but it does not land in a scoring position. Player A’s turn ends.
  4. Player B shoots: lands in Position 3a and scores 5 points. Their turn continues.
  5. Player B shoots again: knocks Player A’s ball into Position 2c while their own ball lands in 2d. Player B scores for their own ball, but the foul ends their turn. Player A scores from the displaced ball and takes control.

Beginner Gameplay Tips

High-value positions are tempting, but a safer score can keep your turn alive.
